Can You Make Money With AdSense on Hubpages?

Yes you can. First though I should probably explain that hubpages.com is a free website where you an register and publish articles, called hubs. You can make money with AdSense, and some other affiliates, but this article is about making money with AdSense on HubPages. AdSense are the small "classified" ads you see all over the web - as a publisher you get paid every time someone clicks on those ads.

HubPages allows you to publish absolutely everything - but if you want to make money you will need to be a little bit clever, assuming you don't want to be excited about making $10 after six months that! There are three key elements to making money on HubPages: keyword selection, back links and content. Yes that's the order of importance too, so lets start with the most important first

Choosing The Right Keywords
If you chose the wrong keywords, or worse, none at all, you will, almost by definition fail. I have a hub that is popular and gets a good amount of search traffic. But the keyword is only worth 5c a click - on a good day! Lesson learned. You need to find a keyword which pays reasonably, I prefer a cost per click of at least $8 a click - remembering that I will only see maybe $2 of that. I also don't want to much competition - I check who is at the top of the search engine rankings - and if its too hard I move on. You also share revenue on HubPages - you will 60% of the page impressions so take that into account too.

Back links are Key
Once you have written your hub you will probably delighted to find it indexed in Google within a day or two. But that's not good enough - you still need to build anchored back links to your hub. Link from your blogs, from other hubs, from EzineArticles! Where ever you can find a do-follow place to drop your anchored link - do it!

Writing a Hub
You need to be writing original content for HubPages, duplicate content is just a waste of time as it rarely gets indexed. You need to have enough content - but not too much - I aim for between 600 and 1000 words. You need to be useful to your reader. You should include some pictures and maybe a video to make the hub interesting too.

Wordpress - Clean Up Your Backend

There are lots of posts dedicated to showing you wordpress plugins that enhance your post functionality and add features but not many that focus on helping you clean and maintain a secure and orderly backend. I’ll include a few you may have seen before but also a few new ones to help keep things running smoothly.

(cue dramatic voice over guy)
In a world where blogging has become mainstream now more than ever these are the two plugins you need … if you download only two plugins all year make sure it’s these two …

OK maybe that was a bit overly dramatic but really these two EVERYONE should be using:

Wordpress Automatic Upgrade - This one absolutely makes upgrading a breeze. I can’t tell you how many man hours this one has saved me.

Wordpress Database Backup - really nothing sucks more than losing a blog because of a catastrophe and this gives you the ability to send a daily backup to an offsite storage location via email (say something like a dedicated gmail account for instance)

Ok now onto the stuff you may not have seen already …

Broken Link Checker - link rot it happens, chances are if you link out a lot or have been blogging for more than a year your blog has some dead links. This plugin will run thru them all identify them and let you fix, update, delete, or unlink them … yea I know cool huh. Warning the first time this thing runs it’s pretty labor intensive, so choose a less busy time like a holiday weekend to first turn it on.

Cross Linker - So lets say you’ve written a great review post of that snazzy new Blackberry Curve you just bought. Your post is so great every time you write the words “blackberry curve” you want it to link to your review post, but you know … you’re lazy or forgetful. Cross linker will do the deed for you. it won’t overwrite where a link already exists, and you can also set it only link the first occurrence of the word so your posts don’t end up looking like intellitext on steroids or something.

Go Codes - Maybe your an affilaite and you’d like redirect all of your affiliate links through a script for tracking purposes or maintenance purposes. use GoCodes to set up a tinyurl like function on your blog so http://example.com/go/blackberry-curve/ sends people to your aff link. Want to change affilaites … easy peezy just update your go code instead of every link … neat huh. if you combine this with Cross linker above it becomes really powerful. You can set up cross linker to link to a gocode page … did we get a lightbulb moment …

Login Lockdown - Hacking wordpress is really becoming an issue lately, and anything you can do to slow people down is a good thing. login lockdown will block IP’s after a specified number of incorrect username/password combinations. You can configure some of the options, not perfect nor fool proof but it’s a start.

Audit Trail - Keep track of who did what and when they did it. Especially helpful when you have multiple admins, editors, or authors around.

Wp Security Scan - Sounds much more impressive than it actually is, but still it does some useful things and makes some good suggestions. Looks like the author also has some good ideas in the pipeline so it’s one to keep an eye on

Redirection - Have a few posts that have gone AWOL or people linking to stuff that doesn’t exist. This post tracks 404’s and lets you set up redirections really easily. Sure there are lots of ways to do this but this one quick easy and integrated into wordpress.

Simple Tags - So maybe you get a little sloppy and tag your posts in an inconsistent manner. You use things like “auto”, “autos”, and “Auto” and now it just looks silly. This plugin allows you to mass edit and neaten things up. It also suggests tags, but be careful if you have 1-2 crazy wild tagging authors it can get out of hand quickly.

Lighter Menus - So maybe you spend a lot of time in your admin panel and are annoyed it takes 2-3 clicks to get anywhere. This plugin shortens the path putting everything in some ajaxy style drop down menus … one click and away you go

WP PhpMyAdmin - maybe you’ve got some things you need to do in your database but don’t want to log in via your control panel. Now you can access your PhpMyAdmin right from wordpress. Use caution I’m sure this opens up some potential do to real harm if you aren’t careful.

WP Dashboard Editor - Annoyed by all the crap wordpress puts in the dashboard? Have a blog where the people logging in aren’t tech savvy and don’t need that info? This plugin lets you remove all that stuff and add your own messages … kewl …

Force User Registration Fields - Maybe you want to know who the people registering for blog are (or at least who they are pretending to be). This lets you decide what information people need to provide when they register for your blog.

New User Email Set Up - want more control over the sign up email new users get … this plugin lets you do it. Helpful if you are using password protected pages as a poor man’s intranet.

Lastly a little tip for you … if you are going to allow guest authors but don’t want them running renegade, and publishing without permission, set their user level to “contributor” not “author”. That way someone who has “editor” or “administrator” privileges has to approve and publish a post before it goes live.

And a hat tip cats who code and aaron wall for pointing out a few of these plugins.

Google Adsense Products

Under the umbrella service of Google Adsense are some assorted Google Adsense products.

These products assist online advertisers in creating ads which target result of searches or content of a particular website. One of these Google Adsense products is Adsense for search; this aids site owners to put a Google Search button directly on their website, so there is no need to go to Google.com and do the search. Together with Adsense for search is Adsense for Content wherein website owners can unobtrusively display ads which are relevant to what visitors are searching for on the site.

Onsite Advertiser Sign-up enables advertisers to bid on a personal website. Using this Google Adsense product, a hyperlinked 'Advertise on this site' text will be displayed in your website. It will redirect advertisers to a page containing information about your website. Advertisers will be instructed on how to create an advertisement that will specifically target your site alone.

Another Adsense product is the Referrals. Through this, you not only increase your earnings, but also inform visitors of your site about significant products and services. The Referral Button will redirect visitors to products, Google Video. If ever that visitor avails of the particular product or service and refers a friend to your site, eventually more and more people will visit your site.

Currently, Google is developing Adsense for feeds. If ever these Adsense products will succeed, you will have the chance to receive pay from Google for every advertisement that readers click. Google is still not accepting applicants for this adsense product. But anytime soon, Adsense for feeds will be formally launched.

Profitable Adsense Keywords

Many will agree to the fact that there is no easy way in finding profitable keywords to trigger the highest paying Adsense ads. But, what many website owners attempt to do is determine keywords that yield high profit but are low in competition. This technique is found to make profitable adsense keywords.

The process of finding profitable adsense keywords begins with finding keywords through tools like Google Adwords. With your Adwords account, you can submit your keywords in csv file format to Google's Traffic Estimator; this allows you to view the estimated daily clicks and average cost of every click (CPC) for every keyword. Multiply the CPC by 30 percent to check how much you can earn for every click. Ultimately, your goal here is to get the keywords with the highest possible CPC to get the highest possible earnings.

Afterwards, you need to see the rankings of the Adsense ads. If you search your keyword on Google, you will see the ranking of the Adsense ads result. Also, by using Adwords Accelerator, you will see Adwords ads for the keyword that you input. If using both methods yielded the same result of advertisers, it means you got a profitable adsense keyword.

But don't get too excited yet, because you still need to have traffic. You can get traffic by using your keywords with the high score and using 'lower' CPC keywords in your Adwords ads. But if you want to adopt the search engine optimization method to direct traffic to sites which carry your ads, make sure that your keywords are among those that are the most sought in the web.

Top Paying Adsense Keywords

Google sends out cheques worth millions of dollars every month because of Adsense. So, why aren't you getting even just a fraction of this?

After all, in theory, making money with Adsense is easy. It could be that your website isn't appropriate to have the top paying Adsense keywords advertised on it. Or, if your site deals more with niche items like anime, it may not be using the top paying keywords for the niche.

It is good fortune that there are a few people mindful of such things to take note of which keywords pay the most. For some reason, "kwik fit insurance" and "donate car" currently pay very high. Although considering what they're about, it isn't entirely unreasonable for them to be high-paying. Overall, things related to cars, like car insurance, car rentals, donating cars, and car insurance are quite popular. Again, this is perfectly understandable since most people either already have a car or want to get one. Chances are, they'll want it insured as well, in case anything happens.

Other keywords related to web hosting, domain names, life insurance, and loans are also ranked high. Some random, popular keywords also include "love potions" and "finding a lawyer." As always, online education also coughs up a few good keywords. It would appear that the larger the industry or business, the more revenue is generated by keywords related to it. Yet, it may be a little strange that "wrongful death" is also among the top paying Adsense keywords. One is inclined to wonder just what exactly that implies.
